Botox is a safe and effective treatment for chronic migraines, with proven data supporting its effectiveness.
During this treatment, Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is injected into several muscles in the head and neck. This temporarily prevents the release of a chemical transmitter called acetylcholine, preventing motor nerve activation of the muscle.
More importantly, Botox moderates molecules which can amplify pain signals in sensory nerves. These nerves are thought to be overactive, or ‘sensitive’, in people with chronic migraines.
Botox is approved for use for migraineurs who experience more than 15 migraines per month. While the cost of Botox is not covered by OHIP, your insurance plan may cover all or a portion of the cost of the medication if you meet certain criteria (> 15 migraines a month; failing treatment with 2-3 different medications because of either lack of effectiveness or intolerance to side effects).
Our Nurse Practitioner is able to complete any necessary paperwork your insurance company requires to have this treatment covered, and can provide you with a prescription for this medication should you meet the criteria for treatment with Botox for chronic migraines.
